Le pilote finlandais a passé cinq saisons chez Mercedes. Il a rejoint les Flèches d'Argent, après quatre ans chez Williams en tant que remplaçant du champion du monde 2016 Nico Rosberg. Avec Mercedes, il a remporté dix courses et obtenu deux titres de vice-champion. Pour 2021, Mercedes a décidé de faire appel au plus jeune George Russell de chez Williamset Bottas a dû partir. Il s'agira de sa deuxième saison avec Alfa Romeo.
